Country Overview: Tanzania
Tanzania stands as one of Africa’s rapidly growing economies; nevertheless, the country grapples with persistent widespread poverty. Approximately half of its populace survives on less than $1.90 per day. The challenge persists due to factors such as high population growth and limited productivity in labor-intensive sectors like agriculture, which employs 75 percent of the population. Although Tanzania’s abundant natural resources provide sustenance for many, their unsustainable exploitation threatens to perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
USAID plays a pivotal role in empowering marginalized segments of the Tanzanian population, particularly women and youth, who are essential contributors to the country’s ongoing development. Women, for instance, earn an average of 63 percent less than their male counterparts, while businesses owned by women generate only 2.4 times less profit. Notably, youth under the age of 15 constitute 45 percent of Tanzania’s 55-million-strong population. Enhancing access to economic and educational opportunities for young people holds the promise of fostering prosperity for all.
The United States Government stands as Tanzania’s most significant bilateral donor. In alignment with the USAID Tanzania Country Development Cooperation Strategy, USAID collaborates closely with the Tanzanian people to realize the nation’s development objectives.
